Food is sometimes polluted with harmful substances. A person who eats such food may get an illness called food poisoning. Food poisoning is usually not serious but some types are deadly. The symptoms of food poisoning usually begin to appear within hours after people eat the poisoned food. Fever is one of the most common symptoms.

Some microorganisms(微生物) can cause food poisoning. After entering the human body, these tiny living things release poisons that make people sick.

Some chemicals can also cause food poisoning. They are often added to food while food is being grown, processed or prepared.

Some plants and animals contain natural poisons that are harmful to people. These include some seafood, grains, nuts, seeds and mushrooms.

When people handle food properly, the risk of food poisoning is very small. Microorganisms multiply rapidly in dirty places and warm temperatures. This means people should never touch food with dirty hands or put food on unwashed surfaces. Some food should be kept in a refrigerator to stop microorganisms from growing. Meat needs to be cooked thoroughly to kill any dangerous microorganism. People should wash food covered with chemicals before eating it. Finally, people should not eat wild mushrooms or other foods that grow in the wild. Some of these foods may contain natural substances that are poisonous to humans. In addition, some types of fish are poisonous.

Most people recover from food poisoning after a few days of resting and drinking more water. If people eat natural poisons, they must go to the hospital right away.

  1. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.Polluted food may make people sick.

  B.Food poisoning means death.

C.There are various types of food poisoning.

  D.Food poisoning can be serious.

【精析】B 根据第一段第三句“Food poisoning is usually not serious but some types are deadly.”

2.We know from the passage that the symptoms of food poisoning___ .

  A.are accompanied by a fever

B.are too common to be noted

  C.can be noticed within hours

  D.can be ignored

【精析】C根据第一段倒数第二句“The symptoms of food poisoning usually begin to appear within hours after people eat the poisoned food.”

3.Food poisoning can be caused by all the following EXCEPT .

  A.some microorganisms

  B.low temperatures

  C.some chemicals

  D.some animals

【精析】B 根据第二段第一句“Some microorganisms can cause food poisoning.”、第三段第一句“Some chemicals can also cause food poisoning.”和第四段第一句“Some plants and animals contain natural poisons that are harmful to people.”

4.From Paragraph 5, we can learn that ___.

  A.mushrooms should not be eaten

B.vegetables are safer than meat and seafood

C.natural poisons are more dangerous than chemicals

D.different types of food should be handled differently

【精析】D 根据第五段第四至六句“Some food should be kept in a refrigerator to stop microorganisms from growing. Meat needs to be cooked thoroughly to kill any dangerous microorganism. People should wash food covered with chemicals before eating it.” A项太过绝对,与第五段倒数第三句“Finally, people should not eat wild mushrooms or other foods that grow in the wild.”

5.It can be inferred from the passage that ___.

A.natural materials are safe in food processing

B.chemicals are needed in food processing

  C.food poisoning can be controlled

D.food poisoning is out of control

【精析】C 根据第五段第一句“When people handle food properly, the risk of food poisoning is very small.”可知,当人们正确处理食物时,食物中毒的风险很小;根据最后一段第一句“Most people recover from food poisoning after a few days of resting and drinking more water.”
