  Passage

Before a new airliner goes into service, every part of it is tested again and again. But there are two tests that are more important than all the others. One of them is very strange and the other is very dangerous. The first of these is called the “tank test”. A modern airliner must fly at very high altitudes. Air must be pumped into the place so that the passengers can breathe. The metal structure of the plane has to be very strong for this reason. When the plane is filled with air, or “pressured”, the air presses against the skin of the plane inside. The pressure on a small window, for example, is like a huge foot that is trying to get out. If a small part of the plane were to crack, the plane would explode in the sky. This is what happened to the first Comets. In order to test the structure of the plane, it is lowered into a huge tank of water. Then it is filled with air. The pressure inside the plane is greater than it ever will be when it is in the air. Finally, there is an explosion. Engineers can discover which part of the plane has cracked. This part is made stronger. The most dangerous test happens when the new plane is going through test flight in the air. The test pilot must find exactly what happens when all the engines are shut off at once. He takes the plane up very high. Then he shuts the engines off, the plane begins to fall like a stone. It is the pilot’s job to find out how he can get control of the plane again. These two tests are examples of how planes are made safe before they ever carry passengers.

  1. The purpose of the “tank test” is to find out ________.

  A. how much air passengers need to breathe at certain altitudes

.B. how much air can be pumped into the plane.

  C. what would happen if the plane crashed in the water.

  D. if there are any weak parts in the plane that would burst under pressure

  2. It can be inferred that during the test, _________.

  A. water is pumped into the plane instead of air

  B. more air is pumped into the plane than usual

  C. water exerts great pressure on the skin of the plane

  D. the weaker parts receive greater pressure

  3. The test is carried out under water because _________.

  A. the pressure under water is greater than in the air

  B. the first Comets exploded in the water

  C. it will be easier for engineers to find out where the crack is

  D. it can protect the testers from being injured

  4. A test flight is dangerous because the test pilot has to _________.

  A. fly his plane at a very high altitude

  B. secure a safe landing in a plane crash

  C. find out how to handle a plane when its engines stop working

  D. fix the damaged engines during the flight

  5. The passage implies that modern airlines are ________.A. reliable B. dangerous C. complicated D. efficient

  【答案解析】

  1.D【解析】 定位于文章第二段中间部分,“In order S test the structure..." 可以看出目的为了测试飞机的结构,A、B、C三项都与飞机的结构无关,故答案为D。

2.B【解析】 是把飞机放到水里,而不是把水注到飞机里,故A选项错误。文章中提 到"The pressure inside the plane is greater that it ever will be when it is in lhe air",由此可推断出 往飞机内注入了更多的气体。
