Elizabeth Blackwell was born in England in 1821, and moved to New York City when she was eleven years old. One day she decided that she wanted to become a doctor. That was nearly impossible for a woman in the middle of the nineteenth century. After writing many letters asking for admission to medical schools, she was finally accepted by a college in New York State. She was so determined that she taught music lessons to get money for the cost of schooling.

In 1849, after graduation from the medical school, she decided to further her education in Paris. She wanted to be a surgeon, but a serious eye problem forced her to give up the idea.

Upon returning to the United States, she found it difficult to start her own clinic because she was a woman. In 1857 Elizabeth and her younger sister, also a doctor, along with another woman doctor, managed to open a new hospital, the first for women and children. Besides being the first woman doctor and founding her own hospital, she also set up the first medical school for women.

1.Why couldn't Elizabeth Blackwell realize her dream of becoming a surgeon?

A.Because she couldn't get admitted to medical schools.

B.Because she decided to further her education in Paris.

C.Because a serious eye problem stopped her.

D.Because it was difficult for her to start a clinic in the United States.

【精析】C 根据第二段第二句“She wanted to be a surgeon, but a serious eye problem forced her to give up the idea.”

2.What is the main obstacle that almost destroyed Elizabeth's chances of becoming a doctor?

  A.She was a woman.

  B.She wrote too many letters.

C.She couldn't graduate from the medical school.

D.She couldn't set up her hospital.

【精析】A 根据第一段第二、三句“One day she decided that she wanted to become a doctor. That was nearly impossible for a woman in the middle of the nineteenth century.”和最后一段第一句“Upon returning to the United States, she found it difficult to start her own clinic because she was a woman.” 故选A。

3.How did Elizabeth earn her tuition fees?

  A.By teaching in medical schools.

  B.By giving music lessons.

  C.By treating patients.

  D.By studying hard.

【精析】B 根据第一段最后一句“…she taught music lessons to get money for the cost of schooling.”

  4. How many years did she use to open her own hospital after graduation?

  A.Eight years.

  B.Ten years.

  C.Nineteen years.

  D.Thirty-six years.

  【精析】A 根据第二段第一句“In 1849, after graduation from the medical school…”和第三段第二句“In 1857 Elizabeth…managed to open a new hospital…” 故选A。

  5. According to the passage, all of the following are “firsts” in the life of Elizabeth Blackwell except that she .

  A.became the first woman doctor

  B.was the first woman surgeon

C.and another two women founded the first hospital for women and children

D.set up the first medical school for women

【精析】B 根据第三段最后一句“Besides being the first woman doctor…she also set up the first medical school for women.”可知,Elizabeth是第一位女医生,还开办了第一所女子医学院,所以选项A、D正确;根据第二段第二句“She wanted to be a surgeon, but a serious eye problem forced her to give up the idea.”可知,她想成为一名外科医生,但一个严重的眼部问题迫使她放弃了这个想法,即Elizabeth没有成为外科医生,所以B项不正确;根据第三段第二句“In 1857 Elizabeth and her younger sister, also a doctor, along with another woman doctor, managed to open a new hospital, the first for women and children.”
